What agriculture careers look like in Sri Lanka

Agriculture in Sri Lanka is far broader than farming. Graduates work as agronomists advising on crops and soils, as agricultural and extension officers serving farming communities, or in plantation management running tea, rubber and coconut estates as assistant or estate managers. Others move into agribusiness, food technology, quality assurance, agricultural research, agri-input and fertiliser sales, agricultural engineering and the fast-growing agri-export trade.

With food security, value-added processing and export crops such as tea and spices high on the national agenda, the sector offers stable public-service careers, estate roles and private agribusiness positions across the country's wet and dry zones.

  • Agronomy, extension and agricultural officer roles
  • Plantation and estate management
  • Agribusiness, agri-input sales and exports
  • Food technology, QA and agricultural research

Qualifications and education needed

Diploma / technician route

A diploma or NDT in agriculture qualifies you for technician, field-assistant and agri-input roles. Many supervisors begin here before topping up to a degree to move into officer and management grades.

Degree route

A BSc in Agriculture, Agribusiness or Food Science from a UGC-recognised university is the standard entry for agronomist, food technologist and agribusiness executive roles. English and practical field experience strengthen any application.

Government officer route

Agricultural officer and extension posts in the Public Service are filled through scheme-of-recruitment competitions advertised in the Gazette, usually requiring a relevant degree or diploma and a competitive examination.

Career outlook

Agriculture remains a backbone of the Sri Lankan economy, and demand is steady thanks to food security goals, established exports such as tea and spices, and the rise of agritech and value-added food processing. Graduates who combine technical skills with agribusiness and supply-chain knowledge are especially well placed as the sector modernises and looks to lift productivity and export earnings.
