Scholarship Guide 2025

Chevening Scholarship Sri Lanka

The Chevening Scholarship is the UK government's flagship international award, offering Sri Lankan professionals a fully funded one-year master's degree at a UK university. This guide explains who qualifies, how to build a competitive application, and how the right qualifications and English scores can make the difference.

What Is the Chevening Scholarship?

Funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and partner organisations, the Chevening Scholarship has supported emerging leaders from over 160 countries since 1983. Sri Lanka is a participating country, and a cohort of Sri Lankan scholars travels to the UK each September to pursue one-year master's programmes across a wide range of disciplines — from public policy and economics to engineering, law, and technology.

Unlike many bursaries that cover only partial costs, Chevening is genuinely fully funded: tuition fees, monthly living allowance, return flights, and arrival support are all included. Scholars are free to choose from a very broad range of UK universities and programmes, provided the course is approved by Chevening and meets the institution's English entry requirements.

The award is specifically designed for future leaders. Chevening looks for candidates who have already demonstrated leadership and who have a credible plan to use their UK education to drive positive change in Sri Lanka after returning.

The Application Process Step by Step

The Chevening application is conducted entirely online through the official Chevening portal. Here is a realistic overview of the stages Sri Lankan applicants will go through:

August to November — Online Application

Complete four essay questions covering leadership, networking, studying in the UK, and your career plan. You must also select three UK university courses. Essays should be honest and specific — generic leadership stories are the most common weakness.

November to January — Review Period

The British High Commission reviews all applications. Shortlisting is based on the quality of your essays and evidence of leadership impact, not just academic grades.

February to April — Interview Stage

Shortlisted candidates are interviewed in Colombo. Interviews typically last 30 minutes and focus on your leadership experience, reasons for choosing your specific course, and your post-study plans for Sri Lanka.

June — Award Notification

Successful applicants are notified. You must then obtain unconditional offers from one of your three chosen UK universities before visa processing begins.

English Language Preparation

Meeting the English language threshold is non-negotiable. Most Chevening-approved programmes require an IELTS Academic score of at least 6.5 overall, with many top universities — including those in the Russell Group — requiring 7.0 or higher. Preparing early is essential, as IELTS sittings in Sri Lanka need to be booked weeks in advance.

Ceylon Open Campus offers IELTS preparation coaching that covers all four bands — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Many students find that structured preparation with experienced tutors leads to significantly better scores than self-study alone. Achieving a strong IELTS score also opens doors to university offers, which are a prerequisite for confirming your Chevening award.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible for the Chevening Scholarship in Sri Lanka?

Applicants must be Sri Lankan citizens, hold an undergraduate degree equivalent to a UK upper second-class honours (2:1) or above, have at least two years of work experience (2,800 hours), and demonstrate leadership potential. You must also meet the English language requirements of your chosen UK university.

What English language score is required for Chevening?

Most Chevening-approved universities require an IELTS Academic score of 6.5 overall, with no band below 5.5. Some universities set higher thresholds — up to 7.0 overall. You must meet the requirement of your specific university, not just Chevening itself. Sitting IELTS well in advance is strongly advised.

What does the Chevening Scholarship cover?

Chevening is fully funded. It covers university tuition fees, a monthly living allowance, return economy airfare between Sri Lanka and the UK, an arrival allowance, and a homeward departure allowance. It does not cover dependant or family costs.

When does the Chevening application open in Sri Lanka?

Applications typically open in August and close in November each year for awards starting the following September. The British High Commission in Colombo announces exact dates. Shortlisted candidates are interviewed between February and April.

How competitive is the Chevening Scholarship for Sri Lankans?

Sri Lanka receives a limited annual allocation of awards, making competition strong. A coherent career narrative, genuine leadership examples, and a clear plan to return and contribute to Sri Lanka post-study significantly strengthen an application. Generic essays are the most common reason for rejection.

Can I apply for Chevening while studying at Ceylon Open Campus?

Absolutely. If you are completing a degree or professional qualification at Ceylon Open Campus, you can simultaneously prepare your Chevening application. Building your IELTS score and accumulating work experience alongside your studies puts you in a strong position by the time you meet the two-year work requirement.
