HND in Sri Lanka
Higher National Diploma Guide
Everything about Higher National Diploma courses in Sri Lanka, the fees, the providers, and how to convert your HND into a full Bachelor's degree.

What is an HND?
A Higher National Diploma (HND) is a Level 5 vocational qualification that sits between a diploma and a full Bachelor's degree. In Sri Lanka it is one of the most popular routes for students who want job-ready skills quickly without committing to a full three or four year degree from day one.
The biggest advantage is the top-up pathway. After completing an HND, you can "top up" with one additional year of study to earn a recognised Bachelor's degree, locally or in the UK, Australia or Malaysia. This makes the HND a cost-effective and flexible stepping stone for Sri Lankan students and working professionals.
- Equivalent to the first two years of a UK degree
- Practical, employment-focused curriculum
- Direct entry to the final degree year (top-up)
- Available in IT, Business, Engineering, QS and English

Entry Requirements
Most HNDs require Ordinary Level passes plus a relevant foundation or Advanced Level. Some IT and business HNDs accept O/L holders directly through a bridging foundation, making them accessible without A/L results.
Fees in LKR
Private HND fees typically range from LKR 250,000 to 600,000 for the full programme, often payable in monthly installments. State HNDs through SLIATE are heavily subsidised. Always confirm whether registration and exam fees are included.
Recognition & UGC
Pearson and Edexcel HNDs are internationally regulated qualifications. For local degree completion, check that your chosen top-up partner is UGC-recognised. State HNDA, HNDE and HNDIT are recognised for government employment.
Top-Up & Career Pathways
An HND is rarely the end of the journey. The most common route is the one-year top-up degree, where your HND credits transfer into the final year of a Bachelor's programme. This saves both time and money compared with starting a degree from scratch.
Graduates use HNDs to launch careers as software developers, business executives, quantity surveyors, network engineers and English language professionals. Many employers in Colombo and overseas recognise the HND as proof of practical competence, and the qualification is valued for Middle East and foreign employment.
