How to Register for IELTS in Sri Lanka

Registration for IELTS in Sri Lanka is straightforward. Both British Council and IDP allow online registration through their respective websites. You can also visit their Colombo offices in person.

1

Choose your test type

Decide between IELTS Academic (university, professional registration) or General Training (immigration, vocational). Choose your preferred format: paper-based or computer-delivered.

2

Select a test date and location

Check available dates on the British Council Sri Lanka or IDP Sri Lanka website. Computer-delivered tests have more frequent dates. Book early — popular dates fill up 4 to 6 weeks in advance.

3

Register and pay

Complete the online registration form. Payment can be made by credit card, debit card, or bank transfer depending on the provider. Keep your booking confirmation and registration number.

4

Prepare your ID documents

You must bring a valid National Identity Card (NIC) or passport to the test venue — the same ID used during registration. Discrepancies between registration and test-day ID will cause disqualification.

5

Receive your Test Report Form (TRF)

Results are released on the date specified at registration. You receive an online TRF through your account. Physical TRF copies can be sent to universities. You can share results directly with institutions electronically.

Getting Value from Your IELTS Investment

With each test attempt costing LKR 50,000 to LKR 62,000, it is important to maximise your readiness before sitting the test. The most common reasons students retake IELTS are underperformance in Writing and an underestimation of the difficulty of Band 7 or higher.

Smart Preparation to Reduce Retakes

  • • Take at least two full timed practice tests before your real exam to accurately gauge your current band
  • • Get professional Writing feedback — self-assessed writing often overestimates your actual band
  • • Use official Cambridge IELTS Practice Tests (Books 1–18) for the most authentic materials
  • • Enrol in a structured IELTS preparation course to accelerate progress and reduce the number of attempts needed

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does IELTS cost in Sri Lanka in 2026?

IELTS fees in Sri Lanka are approximately LKR 50,000 to LKR 62,000 per attempt depending on the test type (Academic or General Training), delivery format (paper-based or computer-delivered), and the test provider (British Council or IDP). Fees change periodically. Always confirm the current fee directly with the test provider when registering, as prices are subject to revision.

Where can I take the IELTS test in Sri Lanka?

IELTS tests in Sri Lanka are offered by British Council Sri Lanka (Colombo) and IDP IELTS Sri Lanka (Colombo and other locations). Computer-delivered IELTS is available at both providers. Paper-based tests are held at specific venues on scheduled test dates. Test dates are available throughout the year — both providers offer frequent dates for computer-delivered tests, sometimes multiple times per week.

Is there a difference in fee between IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training?

In Sri Lanka, the fees for IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training are generally the same. Both versions are offered at British Council and IDP. The key difference is the purpose — IELTS Academic is required for university admission and professional registration (AHPRA, NZREX), while IELTS General Training is used for immigration visas (UK, Australia, Canada) and some vocational training programmes.

Can I get a refund if I cancel my IELTS registration?

British Council and IDP both have cancellation and transfer policies. Generally, if you cancel more than five weeks before the test date, you receive a refund minus an administrative fee. Cancellations within five weeks of the test typically receive a partial refund (usually 50%). Rescheduling to a different test date is also possible subject to terms. Always check the specific cancellation policy on the provider's website at the time of registration.

How many times can I take IELTS in Sri Lanka?

There is no limit to the number of times you can take IELTS. You can register for and take the test as many times as you need. Most students aim to achieve their target band within two or three attempts. The best strategy is to prepare thoroughly before your first attempt to save both money and time. If you do not achieve your target, targeted preparation between attempts — particularly on weak bands — is more effective than simply retaking without changes.

Is it cheaper to prepare for IELTS independently or join a course?

Self-preparation is lower in direct cost but often results in multiple retakes, which adds up. A structured IELTS preparation course at a reputable campus — typically costing LKR 25,000 to LKR 60,000 for a full course — usually means fewer test attempts needed. The combination of official practice materials (Cambridge IELTS books 1–18) plus coaching for Writing and Speaking gives the best return on investment for most students.
