IELTS General vs Academic
Choose the Right Test for Your University, Migration, or Work Goal
A complete, honest comparison of both IELTS formats — what differs in Reading and Writing, which bands universities require, and how Sri Lankan students should decide which test to register for.
What Are the Two Versions of IELTS?
IELTS — the International English Language Testing System — is jointly managed by IDP Education, the British Council, and Cambridge Assessment English. It is one of the world's most widely accepted English proficiency tests, recognised by over 11,000 organisations in more than 140 countries. Sri Lankan students sitting the test in Colombo, Kandy, or other approved centres can choose between two formats: IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training.
Both versions test the same four skills — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — and use an identical 1–9 band scoring scale. The Listening and Speaking modules are exactly the same in content and difficulty. The crucial difference lies in the Reading and Writing papers, and those differences directly determine which version is right for your specific purpose.
Choosing the wrong version wastes money (test fees in Sri Lanka run approximately LKR 45,000–55,000) and can invalidate your application if the receiving institution specifies Academic and you submit General Training results. Understanding the distinction before you register is therefore essential.

Preparing Effectively for Each Version
For IELTS Academic, the single most impactful preparation habit is reading academic articles daily — The Economist, New Scientist, and BBC Future provide the right register and complexity. Practise graph description by writing 150-word descriptions of charts you find in newspapers and timing yourself at 20 minutes.
For IELTS General Training, focus on letter writing formats (formal business letters, complaint letters, and informal personal letters) and reading mixed-format texts such as company notices, job ads, and timetables quickly. Practice skimming for gist and scanning for specific information.
Both versions reward candidates who practise under strictly timed conditions. Use official Cambridge IELTS Practice Test books (available at Colombo bookshops and online) and take at least two full mock tests before sitting the real exam.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the main difference between IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training?
Both tests share the same Listening and Speaking components. The difference lies in Reading and Writing. IELTS Academic uses complex academic texts and asks you to write an essay plus describe a graph or chart. IELTS General Training uses shorter everyday texts and asks you to write a letter in Task 1 instead of a graph description. Academic is designed for entry into undergraduate and postgraduate programmes; General Training is designed for secondary school, work experience, migration, and some professional registration purposes.
Which IELTS version do I need for a UK or Australian university application?
Undergraduate and postgraduate university programmes in the UK, Australia, Canada, and the USA almost always require IELTS Academic. A typical undergraduate entry requirement is an overall band of 6.0 to 6.5 with no individual component below 5.5 or 6.0. Postgraduate programmes often require 6.5 to 7.0 overall. Always confirm with your specific institution because requirements vary by faculty — medical and law schools frequently demand 7.0 or above.
Can I use IELTS General Training for university admission?
In most cases no. The overwhelming majority of degree-level programmes worldwide specify IELTS Academic. IELTS General Training is accepted by some further education institutions for non-degree vocational courses, and it is the correct test for skilled migration visas to Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, as well as for UK settlement and family visas. If you are applying for a student visa but to a university degree programme, you will need Academic.
Is the IELTS Academic test harder than IELTS General Training?
The scoring scale is the same, but the difficulty profile differs. Academic Reading passages are longer, more complex, and drawn from journals and publications — many test-takers find this section more demanding. General Training Reading includes notices, advertisements, and workplace documents which are more familiar. However, General Training requires a higher raw score to achieve the same band in Reading, so the two formats are calibrated to be equivalent in terms of the band they award.
How long is an IELTS score valid, and can I resit if I miss my band target?
IELTS results are valid for two years from the test date. If you do not achieve your target band you can resit as many times as needed — there is no mandatory waiting period between sittings. Most candidates who prepare systematically with timed practice tests improve by 0.5 to 1.0 band on a resit. You may also request a re-mark (Enquiry on Results) within six weeks of your test date if you feel a component was graded incorrectly.
What IELTS band score do I need to study in Sri Lanka at a private campus?
Private higher education institutions in Sri Lanka that offer internationally affiliated programmes (UK top-up degrees, HND programmes, professional qualifications) typically require IELTS Academic 5.5 to 6.0 overall, or an equivalent English qualification such as a strong A/L English result.
