Japanese Language Course in Sri Lanka
JLPT-Aligned Training — N5, N4 & N3 Levels
Learn Japanese at Ceylon Open Campus with structured courses aligned to the Japan Language Proficiency Test (JLPT). Open doors to employment, study, and migration opportunities in Japan.
Why Study Japanese in Sri Lanka?
Japan is one of the world's most technologically advanced economies and is actively welcoming foreign workers to address its aging population and labour shortages. Sri Lankan nationals are among the nationalities actively recruited for Japan's Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) programme, the Technical Intern Training Programme (TITP), and direct employment positions in healthcare, hospitality, IT, construction, and manufacturing.
The Japanese language course at Ceylon Open Campus is designed with these employment and migration pathways in mind. Rather than offering purely conversational Japanese, our curriculum follows the Japan Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) structure, which is internationally recognised and required by Japanese employers and immigration authorities. Passing JLPT N4 or N3 significantly strengthens a visa application and demonstrates the candidate's ability to function in a Japanese workplace.
Our instructors have undergone specialised Japanese language teacher training, combining their linguistic expertise with an understanding of what Sri Lankan learners find most challenging — particularly the three writing systems (hiragana, katakana, and kanji) and the fundamentally different sentence structure from Sinhala, Tamil, or English. Lessons are practical and communicative, with grammar explanation in English alongside contextual examples relevant to workplace and daily-life settings in Japan.
Beyond employment, Japanese language proficiency opens opportunities for student exchanges at Japanese universities (which offer generous scholarships to ASEAN students), tourism, anime and manga translation, and business communication with Japan's many Sri Lanka-based corporate operations in the Colombo port city and export processing zones.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Japanese language levels are taught at Ceylon Open Campus?
We offer courses from absolute beginner (pre-N5) through to JLPT N4 and N3 preparation. Beginners start by learning the hiragana and katakana syllabaries and basic grammar patterns, then progress through vocabulary building, reading, listening comprehension, and structured JLPT exam preparation at the appropriate level.
How long does a Japanese language course take?
The beginner-to-N5 programme runs for approximately 3 months (72 contact hours). The N4 course is an additional 4 months. Reaching N3 proficiency from scratch typically takes 12–18 months of consistent study. We also offer intensive formats for students preparing for the JLPT examination on a fixed deadline.
What is the fee for Japanese language courses in Sri Lanka?
The Beginner / N5 preparation course is approximately LKR 28,000–40,000. The N4 module is LKR 30,000–42,000. N3 preparation costs around LKR 35,000–48,000. Fees include course materials, workbooks, and online vocabulary practice tools. Instalment plans are available.
Can a Japanese language certificate help me get a job in Japan?
Yes. Japan actively recruits skilled workers from Sri Lanka under the Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) visa programme and Technical Intern Training Programme (TITP). Many sectors — nursing care, food service, construction, and manufacturing — require JLPT N4 or N3 as a minimum language qualification. Our courses are specifically structured to prepare students for these requirements.
Do I need any prior language knowledge to join the Japanese course?
No prior knowledge of Japanese is needed for our beginner course. All you need is dedication and consistent attendance. Students who already have some exposure to Japanese scripts or vocabulary can be assessed and placed in a more advanced batch to avoid repetition.
Is the JLPT examination held in Sri Lanka?
Yes. The Japan Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is held twice a year in Sri Lanka — typically in July and December — at authorised test centres in Colombo. Ceylon Open Campus aligns its course schedules to ensure students complete each module with sufficient time to register and sit the corresponding JLPT level.
