Understanding PTE Academic for Sri Lankan Students
PTE Academic has rapidly become the preferred English proficiency test for Sri Lankans applying to universities and migration pathways in Australia and New Zealand. There are several reasons for its popularity: results are delivered within 48 hours (compared to 13 days for IELTS), the test is taken in a controlled computer lab without any human examiner interaction, and the AI scoring system is consistent and transparent with a published score guide.
PTE Academic is also accepted by the UK Home Office for Tier 4 student visas, by over 3,000 universities worldwide, and as evidence for skilled migration to New Zealand. For Sri Lankan students who feel nervous speaking English face-to-face in an IELTS-style oral interview, PTE's computer-based speaking tasks — recorded via headset — can be a less intimidating format.
Despite its apparent advantages, PTE is not simply an easier test — it is a different test. Students who prepare for IELTS with traditional methods often underperform on PTE because the item types are fundamentally different. Dedicated PTE preparation is essential to maximise your score.

Entry Requirements
For current admissions, Ceylon Open Campus conducts only HND in Quantity Surveying, Certificate for Nurse Assistant, and Diploma in English. A brief diagnostic assessment at the beginning of the course helps us understand your current proficiency level and set a personalised improvement plan. We recommend that students have at least a credit pass in English at O/L, or an equivalent baseline before beginning intensive PTE preparation.
The official PTE Academic test does not have entry requirements either — anyone aged 16 or above can register. However, Pearson recommends a minimum of B1 level English before attempting the test. Our diagnostic test will confirm whether you are ready to sit within 8 weeks or need a foundational English booster first.

Career and Life Outcomes After PTE
Passing PTE Academic with a score of 65 or above opens the door to undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at leading Australian, British, and Canadian universities. Graduates who return to Sri Lanka with an overseas degree command significant salary premiums: entry-level roles for overseas-qualified professionals in finance, IT, engineering, and healthcare in Sri Lanka typically start at LKR 90,000–180,000 per month, with senior professionals earning LKR 250,000–500,000 or more.
For students pursuing the Australian skilled migration pathway, PTE is also used as proof of English competency in the points-based General Skilled Migration programme, potentially adding 10 or more points to your EOI (Expression of Interest) score.
