Why Spoken English Matters in Colombo's Job Market
Colombo is Sri Lanka's commercial and financial capital, home to the country's largest concentration of multinational companies, export-oriented businesses, tourism enterprises, IT and BPO firms, international banks, and hospitality sector employers. English is the language of business across all these sectors, and spoken English fluency is increasingly a non-negotiable requirement rather than a desirable extra in job listings for executive, supervisory, and client-facing roles.
Many Sri Lankans have reasonable written English skills from their school education but struggle to speak with confidence in professional situations — interviews, meetings, presentations, or conversations with foreign colleagues and customers. Our spoken English classes in Colombo are specifically designed to bridge this gap by focusing almost entirely on speaking and listening practice, rather than grammar rules and written exercises.
Classes are interactive and communicative from the very first session. Students practise role-plays, discussion activities, storytelling, debate, presentation, and real-world scenarios drawn from Sri Lankan professional life. Instructors provide immediate feedback on pronunciation, word choice, sentence construction, and overall communicative effectiveness — the kind of feedback that simply cannot be obtained from an app or self-study programme.
Our Colombo campus English courses are available through our Colombo campus English courses page. The English course at our original campus is also described on our English course in Colombo campus page. Students who want to progress to internationally recognised language qualifications can combine spoken English training with our IELTS preparation classes.

Frequently Asked Questions
What levels of spoken English classes are available in Colombo?
Ceylon Open Campus offers spoken English courses at three levels: Beginner (for those who have basic written English but struggle to speak), Intermediate (for those who can communicate but lack fluency and confidence), and Advanced / Professional (for those who need English for interviews, presentations, corporate communication, and customer-facing roles). Students are assessed and placed in the appropriate level before classes begin.
How long does a spoken English course take?
Each level runs for 8 weeks, with classes held 3 times per week (approximately 2 hours per session, totalling around 48 contact hours per level). Students who want to move through all three levels consecutively complete the full programme in approximately 6 months. Intensive formats with daily classes are available for those with limited time.
What is the fee for spoken English classes at Ceylon Open Campus Colombo campus?
Each 8-week level is approximately LKR 18,000–28,000, inclusive of course materials, workbooks, and online speaking practice resources. Enrolling in two or more consecutive levels qualifies for a combined enrolment discount. Contact our Colombo campus admissions team for current fee schedules and batch availability.
What will I be able to do after completing the spoken English course?
After the Beginner level, students can hold basic conversations confidently. After Intermediate, they can participate in meetings, conduct telephone calls, and write professional emails. After the Advanced level, graduates can present in English, negotiate, handle media or interview situations, and communicate naturally with native speakers in a corporate or international environment.
Are classes suitable for working professionals?
Yes. We specifically offer early morning batches (7:00 AM–9:00 AM), evening batches (6:00 PM–8:00 PM), and Saturday full-day sessions to accommodate Sri Lanka's working population. Many of our Colombo students are mid-career professionals who need English for promotions, overseas transfers, or new job applications in the BPO, tourism, banking, and IT sectors.
Does spoken English training help with IELTS preparation?
Absolutely. Strong spoken English is directly relevant to the IELTS Speaking component and indirectly benefits Listening comprehension too. Many students who enrol in our spoken English course progress to our IELTS preparation programme. Completing the Advanced Spoken English level before the IELTS course typically results in significantly better Speaking band scores because students have already built the fluency and confidence that the IELTS examiner assesses.
