How the Army Pay Structure Works
The Sri Lanka Army is built around a clear rank structure that runs along two main tracks. Soldiers who enlist begin in the Other Ranks stream, starting as a Private and rising through Lance Corporal, Corporal, Sergeant and Warrant Officer. Those who join through officer cadet training enter as Commissioned Officers, beginning as Second Lieutenant and progressing up to Captain, Major, Colonel and the senior General ranks.
Army pay is not a single figure. It is made up of a basic salary tied to your rank, plus a range of allowances such as combat, ration, rank and hardship allowances. Service is also pensionable, so soldiers and officers who complete the qualifying period earn a pension and welfare benefits on top of their working salary.
- Pay rises steadily with each rank
- Allowances add significantly to take-home pay
- Officers reach the highest salary bands
- Service is pensionable with welfare benefits

What Makes Up Army Pay
Three components combine to form a soldier's total monthly earnings.
Basic Salary
A fixed monthly amount set by your rank and years of service. It forms the core of your pay and increases each time you are promoted to a higher rank.
Allowances
Combat, ration, rank and hardship or operational allowances are added on top of the basic salary. These can lift take-home pay well above the basic figure alone.
Pension & Benefits
Army service is pensionable. After qualifying service, soldiers and officers receive a pension along with medical cover, housing support and welfare benefits.
Benefits Beyond Salary
A career in the army comes with non-cash benefits that add real value to your pay.
